Travels with a Camera – John Larry AFIAP/p ARPS. DPAGB

A different continent or two this week, with our guest speaker John Larry.

Many of the images had been converted from slides for this digital presentation and you have to admire the photography that John was achieving without a histogram and review screen that we benefit from in these days of digital.

The presentation included images from Namibia and Botswana to Nepal, Thailand and Iceland, and although these places outwardly have few similarities what you notice in John’s images is the light. Obviously not afraid of early mornings and photographing into the evening to get the best out of the landscape. Colour and shapes feature in the compositions that John chooses, but this talk wasn’t all about the landscape there were images of wildlife and the indigenous people within.

The evening was complete with John’s storytelling, some direct from the locals, their experiences and observations and other events that John witnessed firsthand such as elephants mourning their dead.

I have been a club member for several years now and find I learn something whichever club event I attend. I enjoy the Studio Group evenings, but equally am happy photographing whatever the surroundings provide at home and out and about.
