The Eastern Shore of Virginia – Mike & Jackie Smith

Jackie and Mike joined us again, this time for a talk on a region they obviously love, but possibly an unusual holiday destination, the Eastern shore of Virginia.

As it happens, it has an important part in British & American history, Virginia is the oldest British state in the USA and ‘we’ were there before the Pilgrim Fathers, although ‘they’ don’t like to talk about that. Many of the place names have English origins, but many other names are from the native tribes that would have been resident. A peninsula that will ultimately be claimed by the sea (a bit like Sandbanks perhaps) some of the islands are not populated for this reason.

Jackie and Mike have visited the region on more than one occasion, which has given them a good insight to the people and the place, and Jackie and Mike’s presentation style made it easy to see why they photograph the quirkiness of the area, and we were amused by their anecdotes about the people, the shops and the signage.
