Print mounting & slide masking
Oct 15th, 2008 by Malcolm Bowditch
On Tuesday 14th October, the club held a very successful evening when the focus was on print mounting and slide masking and how to do it all. The first part of the evening was hosted by Peter Gafney when he showed how he mounts prints for competition and exhibition. He conceded that many photographers have their own preferred methods but there were features common to all effective processes and he illustrated these clearly and effectively. He also provided details of not only what to use but also where to buy these items (see Marilyn’s links elsewhere on the site) and, where appropriate, how to make very effective devices cheaply for oneself.
Norman Carey gave a similarly interesting and informative presentation on how to mount and mask slides during the second half. Although sadly less popular than hitherto, members are still producing slides and the demonstrations, some of which had a Blue Peter ring to them, featuring sticky-backed plastic and baking foil, were enthusiastically welcomed by club members.
In this way, about thirty members enjoyed a genuine club meeting when they were able to watch and question experienced photographers while they demonstrated essential basic techniques critically important to all who wish to show their work to best advantage. We all enjoy our competitions but this was a very pleasant change where nobody lost, everyone gained and the two presenters both got ten.

I must agree with Malcolm’s thoughts on the meeting. This to me was a very useful evening and to actually see print mounting ‘in the flesh’ as it were, helped me to see what I have been doing wrong, how I could do it better while spurring me on to make more of an effort with my prints. Armed with a photo of Peter’s board I have now commissioned my man to make me one! He already has a pair of clamps so we are well on the way.
Although I haven’t as yet taken slides Norman’s instruction was also enjoyable and perhaps I will dig out that ‘old’ camera and put a slide film in and have a go along side digital.
Once again thank you both.
Having mounted prints and masked slides for many years, including professionally in a former life, I had less to gain from such an evening than some other members. My motives for attending were more to support our intrepid demonstrators and of course the social side of the club.
How wrong can you be! I was as spellbound as one of our newest recruits, as I watched demonstrations of precision work, carried out on a mixture of “Heath Robinson” machinery, using ingenuity and common sense. And yes, I did learn a lot that will alter and improve my mount cutting workflow and also a few useful tips should I need to mask slides.
Thank you both for an entertaining and informative evening.
Thankyou both for a very interesting, informative and fun evening (see also Eureka moment)
