President’s Cup & Trophy
Sep 23rd, 2009 by Keith Chaloner
At a well-attended meeting on Tuesday 22nd September the club was pleased to welcome old friends of the club Norman and Carol Wiles, Norman to judge the entries for the annual President’s Cup and Trophy competitions and Carol for the pleasure of her company. Some of the better entries from the previous season’s Points Cup competitions qualified for entry and, as a result, thirteen slides and thirty-four prints were presented for comment.

From a body of work described as being of ‘fine quality’ by the judge, six slides and twelve prints were held back before his final decisions were made. Graham Poynter won the President’s Trophy for the best slide, a fine Lake District landscape, and Malcolm Bowditch was presented with the Cup for a monochrome image of a magnolia. This was the result of the judge having to make an impossible judgement between a number of very good photographs of widely differing subjects from three or four photographers any one of which could have received the award with equal justification.

A valid point that has often been made about this event is that it is not the ‘best of the best’ competition if only because, in addition to the ‘9 to 10 points awarded’ qualification, members are limited in the number of images that may be submitted. Rather, it is an enjoyable occasion at which members have a last look at some of the photographs from the previous season before getting on with the real business of presenting new and hopefully better pictures in the new one.
Although judged by Norman, it was a special pleasure for the recipients - and indeed for all present - to have the trophies presented by our President, Fred Denham.
The successful SAPA Exhibition, held recently in the Dolphin Centre, Poole resulted in members of the viewing public voting prints by members of our club as the first, second and third most popular! This was a fine club achievement and John Burton, with first and second, and Norman Carey third are to be congratulated at the individual level.
