‘Members’ Prints & Slides from the summer season’
Sep 17th, 2008 by Malcolm Bowditch
On Tuesday last, members’ prints and slides from the summer season were brought along to the club for comment by Brian Winkle. Brian is, of course, very well known in the area as a judge of considerable repute – and with very good reason. He is a good photographer with the happy knack of being able to recognise both strengths and weaknesses in a photograph in a very short time. Couple these qualities with the ability, which he has, to convert this mental analysis into an articulate and logical critique and an uncommonly effective judge is the result. Never formulaic in his approach, his commentary was both instructive and entertaining. As with any aesthetic judgement, there is no ‘right’ or ‘wrong’ but, even if one occasionally disagrees with them, his compelling critiques ensure that one thinks again – and hard – before being convinced one way or the other.
A good crowd of members was present to enjoy the evening and a number of interesting images were on show. For some, these were ‘works in progress’ and it is likely that many will appear again in competition as the season progresses.
