Coastal Walk
Jul 13th, 2009 by Keith Chaloner
When we woke up on Sunday morning, we were pleased to see a big improvement in the weather from the previous day. It looked as though it would be fine for the walk to Old Harry Rock that Eric had organized, and we were looking forward to it.
David and I arrived at the National Trust car park where Eric, Maureen and Brian (James) were waiting. Ten thirty came and as no one else had turned up, the five of us set off up the country lane that led to Ballard Down. We took our time, stopping from time to time to admire the view and take a few photos. There were some interesting flowers and insects, including the Marbled White butterfly and the black and red Six-spot Burnet moth. Also a sky-lark which was singing as it soared into the sky, before plummeting back to the ground.
After spending some time out at the rock we started to make our way back. Some three hours of walking, meant that we were all quite hungry by the time we arrived back at the Bankes Arms. After a look at the extensive menu, we had a nice meal and a well earned drink or two, which brought to an end a very enjoyable day. A lovely walk and good weather, we couldn’t have wished for more. It was a shame that there weren’t more of us there to enjoy it.
