John Ives – South America ( Galapagos, Ecuador, Peru, and Patagonia)

John Ives was our guest speaker back in November, a keen diver and photographer, we had an evening of images and stories of his experiences travelling around South America, an education on the diverse regions and spectacular wildlife plus a history lesson here and there.

I can see the appeal of a G&T on (glacial) ice, and could also enjoy the remoteness of some areas, and who wouldn’t want to see hummingbirds flitting about and experience the frustration of trying to photograph them.

We got a sense of the strong currents around some of the islands in the underwater shots, and enjoyed images of some awesome creatures such as hammerhead sharks, turtles and manta rays. Back on land the sun, wind and weather dictated the terrain, from barren areas through to lush, mountainous to glaciers, all finished off with colourful sunsets at the end of each day.

I have been a club member for several years now and find I learn something whichever club event I attend. I enjoy the Studio Group evenings, but equally am happy photographing whatever the surroundings provide at home and out and about.
