Laura travelled up from Yeovil to present an interesting evening on breaking the rules.
Laura is keen to point out you have to know the rules to break them, but once you have the basics, to make your work individual and to open up your own style you should be thinking of ‘rules’ as guidelines and you don’t have to conform.
To be creative you should be making the decisions, from the camera settings, the framing and the perspective. Laura adds at this point that she likes ‘negative space’ in an image and when we see her work this is apparent and is part of her style.
Laura likes to use a mood board, especially for commercial work, but she will adapt and react as required, and adds that she listens to her inner rebel.
How you use colour when styling an image, or going mono for the final edit can change the mood of an image as does the crop you choose.
The evening was a masterclass in tips and strategies to develop your own style. The images Laura produces are outstanding and hopefully we all left with a little bit of inspiration.
