Digital Camera to Printer Course 2009

Session 1
Introductions.
Simple photography.
How a digital camera works.
Resolution.
Practicals: Setting time and date. Menus, setting, taking, and reviewing.
Holding the camera.
Session 2
More on resolution.
Compression.
Memory Cards.
Batteries, plain and rechargeable
Parts of a camera.
Practicals: Set camera for best resolution, medium compression, identify Mode dial, Shutter button, LCD, White Balance controls, Sensitivity control.
Session 3 on Feb. 14 @ 7:30 pm
Manual settings –aperture and shutter priority
Manual focussing.
Dial modes – Landscape, portrait, close-up, movement, night-shot,
Adjust for lighting problems.
Practicals: Use A, S, M settings. Take indoor portraits, close-ups, movement
Use of sensitivity and light adjustment settings.
Session 4 on Feb. 28 @ 7:30 pm
Flash: on-board, and external/flash guns.
Why use flash?
What are its limitations?
What are its advantages?
Red-eye reduction
Colour balance.
Coloured and diffused flash.
Practicals: practise red-eye reduction. Maximum flash illumination distances. “Stopping” movement. Fill-in flash.Slow sync.
Session 5 on March 13 @ 7:30pm
Getting information from camera into computer.
USB link. Using a base.
Card reader.
Built-in slots
Portable memory: Hard-disc, CD,USB flash memory,
Thumbnail software. Transferring to computer Hard-drive.
Album/Organiser programs.
Contact sheets
Back-up CD/DVD
Practicals: Try direct links from various cameras – Windows XP should show a file with thumbnails.Transfer into portable disc.Transfer to Hard-disc. Examine USB, Firewire (both plugs) plugs and sockets.
Session 6 on March 27 @ 7:30pm
Using the printer. Explanation of RGB versus CMYK etc.
Keeping printer clean. Cartridges clean. Explain maintenance – nozzle check, head cleaning, printhead alignment.
Resolution for printing at various sizes- Photoshop dialogue box Image size.
Explain Epson dialogue box for printing.
Papers.
Practicals: using a shot from any camera go through requirements to print it out at best using available printer correctly connected.
Invite students to have a try if time permits.
